Part 3: Baroque Architecture
Please complete the architecture worksheet for the Baroque time period. Make sure to discuss why the building was created, and what purpose it served.

Baroque Architecture vs. Frank Gehry
Baroque architecture witnessed a transition from the orderly designs of the Renaissance to one of tumultuous drama and movement. The architecture of Frank Gehry today marks a similar departure from the orderly forms of modernist architecture.  Select and fully identify a structure created during the Baroque period and a structure designed by the architect Frank Gehry.  Discuss how each structure reacted against an earlier architectural movement and why.

Short Answer Essay Slides



2001 Short Essay: These two works are by the same artist. Using both works, discuss ways in which the works reflect the artist’s medieval roots as well as his awareness of Italian Renaissance innovations. (10 minutes)




1999 Short Essay: The work on the left is Henry VIII (1540) by Hans Holbein the Younger, the work on the right is Chefren, created about 2500 BCE in Egypt. Discuss the ways in which the artists of these works convey the power and authority of each ruler. (10 minutes)

Assignment #60 - Due: Monday, Feb. 7

Giovanni Bellini, in his continuous development as an artist, created what is known as the Venetian style of painting. 
Trace this development by briefly discussing influential artists, styles, and media. 

Describe the term sacra conversazione.  Give an example and justify your choice.

How do the style characteristics in the Venetian school artworks differ from the Florentine/Roman style? (Name 4 reasons)

Gardner describes Titian as the most prodigious and prolific of the great Venetian painters, in fact, among the very greatest painters of the Western world.
The Madonna of the Pesaro Family (22-36) shows Titian’s individual approach to composition as a variant of the High Renaissance style of Leonardo or Raphael. Explain. 

From the Venus of Urbino (22-61) one can see that Titian uses color as an element of more than mere description but also one that organizes the composition.  Explain

 How does the composition of Pontormo’s Decent From the Cross (22-42) shows characteristics of the Mannerist style?

What piece of sculpture sums up Italian and French Mannerism, and who sculpted it?  What is significant about it?

What church’s design was most influential on later church design and specifically Baroque church architecture? 

Contrast Tintoretto’s Last Supper (22-52) with Leonardo’s Last Supper (22-3).

What seems to have been the major influences on Palladio’s designs, especially on Villa Rotunda? 

 Both the Villa Rotunda and San Giorgio Maggiore are described as “examples of classicism at its most correct, using “rational,” organization. Explain.
