Column of Trajan vs. The Burning of Sanjo Palace

2007 Long Essay Question: Throughout history, art representing hostility or violence has been used for a variety of purposes. Using the Column of Trajan (10-42) and The Burning of Sanjo Palace (8-16) explain how and why each work of art communicates hostility or violence. Discuss how each work reflects a societal or cultural response to a particular war or battle at the time each was created.

Some things to consider:
  • Remember to compare and contrast the two works of art! Think about FORM and FUNCTION FOR EACH PIECE!
