1. What three nineteenth-century phenomena does the text identify as having contributed to the greater consciousness of modernity, “the state of being modern.”? 
2. How do the works of Millet and Daumier act as social and/or political commentary?  How has the position of the artist changed so that he/she is now making such statements? (Use specific examples.)
 3. Although hailed as the father of Realism, Courbet did not like to be called a Realist. What can we gather from his statements were his goals as a painter?
4. List two features of Courbet’s Burial at Ornans (FIG. 29-2) that horrified contemporary critics

Tuesday, March 22: Assignment #76 - Slide Notes

Complete the slide notes. For each piece of art, fully identify with title, artist, date, and time period. Include at least 3 facts about each piece. Think about its use as propaganda, funerary art, public art, religious art, who commissioned it, why was it made, and what purpose did it serve? 
Wednesday, March 23: -Sketchbook Assignment
  
Analyze Ukiyo-e (Japanese) woodblock prints depicting beautiful women with bathing scenes (Woman at Bath) by Impressionist artist Edgar Degas. Discuss the cultural attitudes towards women and the time in which these works of art were made. In your discussion, make connections to late Classical works such as Praxiteles’, “Aphrodite of Knidos” and Alexandros’ “Venus de Milo”).

Thursday, March 24 - Sketchbook Timeline Assignment
Time Line of the Modernism – Chapter 29 
Using the following categories, choose three works of art from each category. First, fully identify the category, and the major historical events that shaped the artwork during that time. How did the culture influence the art? Fully identify each piece of art you selected, and describe the distinguishing characteristics of each piece. In total, you will have discussed 15 specific pieces of artwork, and described 5 different time periods for a total of 20 points.

4.) Symbolism

Friday, March 25: 2005 Long Essay – Established Traditions

Frequently in the history of art, artists and architects have challenged established traditions.
Select and fully identify two works that challenged established traditions.  One example must have been produced before 1800 c.e.  Discuss how and why each work constituted a significant challenge to accepted artistic conventions of its time.

Please use an example Chapter 29 and another from your own choosing. Monet, Manet, Courbet, Van Gogh would be good choices, but feel free to use your own choice.
