Make sure you are thinking about the work of art’s purpose and historical context! (Do not just simply  describe the piece!)

Tuesday, October 18: Assignment # 18
Please read the following NYTimes article and answer these questions in an essay format to be collected. Elaborate on your responses.
  • What is patrimony? Why is this important and sometimes a controversial topic in the art world?
  • The reporter discusses a quote by Walter Benjamin – Put this in your own words- what does he mean by this?
  • Discuss the dilemma of proximity vs. authenticity.
  • Why is this an issue, not just for the British Museum, but almost every museum?·         What do you think the reporter means by “What, in this context, does it really mean to own culture?”
  • How and why do theses works of art stand as a nationalistic symbol?
  • Take a stance- Where do you believe the Elgin marbles belong? Support your opinion with relevant arguments.

Short-Answer Essay
Answer the short answer essay question on the sheet provided. This should not take longer then 10 minutes, as that is the amount of time you have on the AP test to answer a question like this.

In the mid-fifth century B.C.E., a Greek sculptor wrote a treatise titled the Canon that was summarized as follows.
Beauty consists in the proportions, not of the elements, but of the
parts, that is to say, of finger to finger, and of all the fingers to the
palm and the wrist, and of these to the forearm, and of the forearm
to the upper arm, and of all the other parts to each other.
Identify the sculptor who wrote the Canon. Select and fully identify one work of art that reflects his ideas.
Making specific reference to both the text above and your selected work, analyze how the work reflects those ideas. (10 minutes)

Friday, October 21: Assignment # 21:
Time Line of Ancient Greek Artwork (to be completed in your sketchbook)
Using the following categories, choose three works of art (pottery, sculpture, architecture, etc.) from each period. First, fully identify the time period, and the major historical events that shaped the artwork during that time. Fully identify each piece of art you selected, and describe the distinguishing characteristics of each piece. In total, you will have discussed 15 pieces of artwork.
