Monday, October 3: Assignment #9 & Sketchbook

1.) Outline and typed essay discussing the seated scribe and Buddha:

Any artistic representation of the human body is an artificial construct determined by cultural need, function, desire of the person represented, or the imagination of the fabricator. Select two examples of a figure from different cultures. At least on culture must be from beyond the European tradition. Discuss the social, cultural, religious, or political implications of each example. (30 minutes)

2.) Sketchbook Assignment: Theme: Family Portraits  -Compare and contrast Seated Couple, Dogon (Fig. 34-9) Menkaure and Khamerernebty (Fig. 3-13)

3.) Make sure your other 2 sketchbook assignments are in order: Hierarchy of Art and the Near East Timeline. I will be grading all 3 at once.


Tuesday, October 4: Assignment #10

Using the worksheet, separate the artwork into categories by style. For each style, include the date, characteristics of the style, and the major art, architecture, and artists that are listed.

Make sure each category is in chronological order. Hint: Start with Sumerian Art and end with New Kingdom.

I have included an example below.
You can type this (copy/paste from the blog) or handwrite it.

This will be collected.

Define:

Contrast the Minoan civilization to that of the Mycenaean culture.  Be sure to explain how geography had a huge affect on their culture.

Compare and contrast the Palace Complex at Knossos and the Citadel at Tiryns.  How are they similar and how different in terms of their plans and actual structures?  What would account for these differences?

Animals feature prominently in Minoan and Mycenaean art. Select a representative piece from each culture and discuss the differences in how animals are depicted and for the purpose they served. What does this tell a viewer about the societies that produced the images?

Friday, October 7: Assignment #12

Using the whole chapter, answer each of the guided questions that relate to chapter 4. They follow the heading in the chapter.

This is in lieu of a chapter outline.

Early relief sculpture, such as the panel of Ti, contain conceptual vs. optical- twisted perspective.  What does that mean?

Explain the difference between status and depiction in Egyptian art.

Tuesday, September 27: Assignment # 7

Venn Diagram (Part 1)

Compare and contrast “The Seated Scribe” (3-14) and “Shakyamuni Buddha” (7-27) with the sheet I provided. Feel free write anywhere on the sheet.

Make sure to look at their purpose/function and  how they differ stylistically. (Color, texture, size, negative space, etc….)

Wednesday, September 28: Assignment #8

For each slide, ID each artwork, and discuss at least three significant facts about each piece.

Make sure to address the 4’S in each paragraph for each piece.

Sketchbook Assignment Due 10/3

 Theme: Family Portraits

Compare and contrast Seated Couple, Dogon (Fig. 34-9) Menkaure and Khamerernebty (Fig. 3-13)

TASK: In your sketchbook, you are comparing the connection between or among works of art. This requires you to understand the periods in which each work was created. Thus, the first thing you must do is read about the historical context and in which each work was created in order to make a meaningful comparison. In your response be sure to discuss the compositional structure and the symbolism of both works in the context of their cultural meaning. You may use your text book as well as outside sources in order to obtain this information.

Use the menu and the 4S’s to help you get started!

Monday, September 19: Assignment # 5

Quiz on Chapter 2 from the review book- Part of your summer assignment

Please define the following:
Cuneiform
Ziggurat
Cella
Registers
Votive Offering/Figure

Answer the following questions:
  • What was the Standard of Ur? Describe the scenes depicted on the two sides and discuss how it is an example of narrative in art.
  • What was the purpose of a Ziggurat? What did it look like and how was it decorated?
  • Why do we think the “Votive Statues,” from the Square Temple, Eshnunna represent an early example of Ancient Near eastern religious practice?
Tuesday, September 20: Assignment # 6

Using the image Ashurbanipal Hunting Lions (2-24) completely fill out the 4S sheet and menu. Make sure you answer all of the questions fully. You may need to read through different parts of the chapter to be able to answer all of the questions fully.

Wednesday, September 21: Assignment #7
Completely fill in the timeline sheet with the most important works of art from each culture. Add any other important facts.  Use your sketchbook!
You may use your textbook as well as class notes.

This will help you review for your quiz tomorrow.

You will probably need more room, so feel free to redraw the timeline how you deem necessary.

Using images 3-8 to 3-11 (Pyramid Complex) fill out the “Box Sheet.” Make sure to include all relevant information. Be familiar with the cross-section view (3-9). Some boxes will have more information than others, and that is ok. You should be able to include something in each box.

Week 1 Homework: September 11-16




Monday, September 12: Assignment #1 – “Art Defined”

Using the images that I have printed out, (note: the numbers on the images correspond to the chapter then the image) rank the following slides according to the hierarchy of importance in terms of how they fit your definition of what “Art” is.  As you rank these images, use the text book to fully identify the title, date,  artist (if known).  Make any notations next to the images that you think are necessary.

Be prepared to present your reasons for why you ranked your images the way you did.  You will be asked to discuss our choices in class.

If you already bought your sketchbook, please complete this assignment in it, if not, you can complete it on separate pieces of paper to hand in and then attach it in your sketchbook.

Wednesday, September 14: Assignment #2 – The Menu and 4’s sheet

Use the handout to discuss the work on the right.  (28-22) Review the information printed in the textbook about the work of art. Complete the menu, select what major themes this work displays, as well as which styles are appropriate under the 2-d category.
Next, on the back of the sheet, complete the “4’s”…Make sure to answer each question to the best of your ability.


Thursday, September 15: Assignment #3 –Ancient Africa Timeline

Please fill in the information that pertains to each heading on the timeline. You will need to read through the chapter to get a good understanding of what periods are important and why they are important.
Friday, September 16: Assignment #4 – Compare/Contrast 

Using the Venn diagram, compare and contrast the two images on the sheet. (Images 15-5 and 32-4). Make sure to look at how each work was created, and why. Why is it significant to that culture? Make sure to ID each piece, and answer the question on the bottom of the sheet.
